![]() ![]() An elevator shaft of mirrored stainless steel, a new favorite material finish for Apple, rises from the center of the stairs.Īpple says that it has dramatically increased the height of the store and nearly doubled its square footage. The staircase has a rectangular grid texture for added traction, and the elimination of glass treads makes it easier to navigate for those with low vision. A new staircase with cantilevered metal treads and a curved glass handrail spirals underground. While locals may use the new side entrances for quicker access, visitors and tourists making a trip to see the store will still want to enter through the iconic cube. Staircases near the GM Building side of the plaza wrapped by stone planters descend into the store below. These channels partition off two seating areas filled with round-cornered stone benches and honey locust trees bordering 58th and 59th Streets. The detail and dimension of each skylight is stunning - like a human iris staring into the Manhattan sky.īeyond the lights, narrow stone walkways bridge a bubbling pool on both sides of the plaza. The fixture bases are sculpted from the same stone as the plaza and capped by reflective capsules doubling as public seating. ![]() A subset of these lights - 9 on each side of the cube - rise out of the ground as clear skylights called “sky lenses” that peer down into the store. At night, they illuminate the plaza with an ambient glow. During the day, the lamps add texture to what would otherwise be empty paving and allow light to flood in underground. Apple worked closely with Foster + Partners to create a top store for New York City, and the first thing you’ll notice about the reimagined space is a more inviting plaza.Ħ2 circular lights dot the new plaza in a grid surrounding the cube. The site was literally a hole in the ground two years ago, as crews completely demolished the old space and started over. Make no mistake, Apple Fifth Avenue is a totally new store. The entrance still features 15 glass panes (down from 90 before 2011) and a hanging illuminated Apple logo. So when Apple peeled away the temporary iridescent wrappings that announced the store’s return earlier this month, it revealed a cube that looked remarkably familiar. Altering its appearance significantly would be almost akin to rewriting history. Though dwarfed by the skyscrapers surrounding it, the glass cube has been a modern monument in New York City for the past 13 years. It takes great restraint and judgement to tastefully update a store like Apple Fifth Avenue. Ahead of the famous store’s reopening, timed to coincide with the release of the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and Apple Watch Series 5, Apple gave us a sneak peek inside. Apple Fifth Avenue and its 32-foot glass cube entrance have returned to New York City. How do you improve on an icon? That’s the challenge Apple tackled to complete its most extensive store renovation to date. ![]()

![]() “If you’re broaching a sensitive topic, a lot can get lost in translation over text. Text messages don’t convey emotional nuance in the same way a voice note can, Maddy says. “It’s like a phone call, except you don’t have to rely on both parties being free at the same time. ‘It’s like a phone call, except you don’t have to rely on both parties being free at the same time’ Photograph: Amit Lennon/The Guardianįor voice note fan, model and digital editor Maddy Reid, 23, who sends 10 to 50 a day over WhatsApp, much of their appeal lies in how efficient they are to send, particularly when you’re on the move. Social media comments range from mundane observations like the Twitter user who got 142.6 likes for pointing out how often she ends a voice note with “so yeah”, to more impassioned rants on voice note etiquette. They are beloved of younger generations, but older family members seem to find them baffling. Another, who pushes a pram, says they’re indispensable. One friend calls them “the worst thing to happen to communication since the ‘seen’ receipt on messenger”. Yet for something seemingly so inoffensive, voice notes are incredibly divisive. Voice notes gives women an avenue to speak in the same way men do – without fear of being cut off or dismissed In 2018, American singer Charlie Puth felt passionate enough about voice notes to name an album after them and on her latest release, 30, Adele took this tribute a step further by including voice notes from her son, Angelo, in the track My Little Love. Last month, dating website String launched with the tag line “Date with your voice”. Twitter has introduced a voice note feature, as have dating apps Hinge, Bumble and Happn. Instead of a simple “I’ll meet you outside the station” text, friends now send long rambles about how they were going to catch such and such train, but then they realised the bus would drop them outside, and while they were on the bus they thought about this idea for a novel … It’s like having to sit through an unedited podcast. When WhatsApp introduced them in 2013, receiving a voice note felt like a novelty – something more human in a sea of emojis and abbreviations – now, around 200 million are sent every month. But, whether I use voice notes or not, among my peers they are becoming ever harder to avoid. This recent encounter will forever remind me why I’m better off texting (like most twentysomething Gen Zs, I hate phone calls, with their awkward silences and long, drawn-out endings: “Yep, speak soon, good to chat, bye, love you, yeah bye, bye, bye …”). In a last-ditch attempt to salvage the unsalvageable, I changed the subject: “Do you like Drake’s new album?” It was clumsy, obvious, and from then on he ignored me. I imagined him raising his eyebrows on the other end of the line. I should have deleted the recording but I was so panicked I forgot I could do that. I only lasted about 10 minutes before I limped off.”Īround 200 million voice mails are sent every month. In response to his “How was your day?” I started telling him about the bike I had just got. So I focused on getting comfy, and pushed the record button. But don’t voice notes feel so much more intimate? Hearing the subtleties of the other person’s speech, as if they were whispering in your ear – and I wanted to get closer to him. ![]() My stomach fluttered because I knew this meant he wanted to get closer to me, yet I also freaked out because there was so much pressure to get my response right.Īt first, I ignored the switch in communication and started typing out a message, because I hate my voice – the way I can hear my nerves prickle through my speech, the high pitch of my intonation and the number of times I say “like”. It was the first time I’d heard his voice – it was flat, low and attractive. My phone buzzed and I picked it up to respond to my crush’s last text – except this time it wasn’t a text, but a voice note, a short audio file you send via Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp. ![]() ![]() I lay on my bedroom carpet looking at the blue of the ceiling, feeling like I was in a teen movie. ![]() ![]() More Durable: LEDs are less prone to breakage and don't contain mercury.Longer Lasting: LED panel lights can last up to 13 times longer than their fluorescent counterparts, translating to reduced maintenance costs. ![]() UV light can also cause a fabric's color to fade, another reason to choose LED panel lights for residential spaces. If they're having a conversation and want to add a point of their own, they're more likely to come up with something that seems bizarre and out of place to most people, because they don't have as much "typical" material to draw from. Sometimes people are seen as weird because they've spent hours and hours accumulating non-typical knowledge and experiences. Having too many esoteric thoughts, knowledge, and experiences in your head Sometimes this behavior is a type of unconscious self-sabotage. The obvious drawback is that outside of their own little world other people think they're acting odd and alienating. ![]() At other times they get entertainment simply from acting strange. Sometimes it's like they have an ongoing in-joke with themselves. They may revert to this kind of behavior when they're bored or have nothing else to do. Like they may say a comment out loud that will entertain them to hear, but will offend or confuse everyone else. One thing I've noticed with supposedly weird people is that they'll do little things to amuse themselves and not care what everyone else thinks of it. A lot of people will label this kind of behavior as weird and see it as pretty off-putting. The same people often come across as immature in general. They get carried away and go overboard with the silliness. Some people can act pretty childish and hyper, especially when they're excited or joking around. Of course, just improving your social skills will correct this problem. Being really quiet? People often get called weird when they make a lot of social mistakes. This point and the ones below cover behaviors that are more objectively problematic. Other people may form the impression that you're a weird person all around, even if they laugh at some of the kooky stuff you come up with. Some people may not think anything of it when you show your random sense of humor. I think what's important is to know your audience. There's nothing wrong with making jokes that are really out there. If you make a lot of strange or random jokes people may conclude your overall personality is like that. In another article, Thoughts on Being Funny, I mention that people can't help but assume your sense of humor reflects what you're like as a person. This is the variety of weirdness that many people probably won't want to change too much, or only make slight practical tweaks to. Many people will be seen as weird simply for dressing differently, having an esoteric hobby, having a unique way of looking at the world, or having opinions that aren't entirely mainstream. Sure, some people would argue that Goths are weird in other ways, but I think that's subjective. I've never heard anyone say, "Look at that weird jock", but you'll often hear, "Look at that weird Goth kid." To a large degree Goths are seen as weird, and jocks as normal, because one subculture is way more common than the other. Here are some things that may earn someone a negative "weird" label: Simply being too different from the norm in some way The choices someone will make depends on how much their orientation toward changing socially is based on being pragmatic and adapting to the world vs. It's a judgment call that everyone has to make for themselves. ![]() ![]() The other nice benefit of this system is that more graphic games end up having their age restrictions be legally enforceable. Also, the European view on comic violence often puts it considerably lower on the chain of age requirements - nobody who played Mario ever went out and jumped on another kid's head that I've ever heard of. That narrow focus on the largest audience means that it can be easy to match up a gamer with a game suitable for his age, without forcing a 16-year-old to play Crash Bandicoot unless he or she really wants to. ![]() Strengths and Weaknesses of the UK systemMuch like the ESRB, the double-whammy of PEGI/BBFC has some good points and bad.įirst of all, the age spread between PEGI and BBFC allows for four distinct age groups (12+, 15+, 16+ and 18+) in the teen years, the largest demographic of video game players. Games such as Grand Theft Auto have traditionally had an 18 rating, making it illegal for anyone under 18 to purchase (although this does not prevent an older person legally buying it and giving the game to someone younger). It later approved a modified version of the game, with some of the gore turned down. In history, the BBFC has only refused a rating to one game, Carmageddon. Unlike the other two ratings agencies, BBFC ratings are enforceable by law, meaning that someone caught selling to a person under the age of 15 or 18 (depending on rating) can be fined, jailed, or both. Once a rating is handed out, it is subject to the same appeals laws as are provided to films, but the game cannot just be barely edited and resubmitted in hopes for a more favourable draw like can be done with the ESRB. The BBFC now only hands out two ratings for video games, mostly because of the games it starts out with.īBFC 15+ and 18+ ratingsThese games often undergo some decent testing by a highly-trained panel of examiners who are hired in 5-year intervals (the position used to be permanent). Games that receive a 16+ or 18+ and include gross violence or sexual content end up on the BBFC's list for a second review. Of course, the agency has far too little time to rate every game that comes into the UK, and so it chooses those games based on ones that get filtered out of the PEGI system. The BBFC has extended the Parliamentary Video Recording act of 1984 to allow for computer games and other digital media. And because of that, it's got a little extra weight that it can swing around. Suffice it to say, the agency has been around the block a time or two. I'll skip the history, because it could fill volumes unto itself. PEGI is not a government agency and is not affiliated with either the EU or any of its member nations.īBFCThe BBFC, or British Board of Film Classification, is one of the oldest ratings agencies in the world. However, there are some games where that holds true - games rated for excessive violence or nudity get cherry-picked to fall into the BBFC's lap. This includes games sold in the UK, where many residents are under the impression that all of the age requirements are enforceable by law. ![]() The thing that is least known about the PEGI system is that, much like its ESRB cousin, the ratings are unenforceable. If the game rates higher than 16+, an actual copy of the game is then required and evaluated. There is no initial requirement for seeing the game's content - the questions are evaluated and a rating is provided. The questionnaire is based on the both the Netherlands Institute for the Classification of Audiovisual Media test and the Kijkwijzer system (Dutch). However, the tests are slightly different - the publisher must submit a rather long questionnaire outlining the game's content. Like the ESRB, PEGI ratings are voluntarily sought by publishers. Aside from the obvious ones like Drug Use and Violence, PEGI has descriptions for things like Discrimination and Fear (as in horror, like Resident Evil). Each of these is represented by a picture, making it easy to visually recognize the possibly offensive parts of the game. PEGI ratings and content descriptionsPartially in an effort to clearly label and partially in an effort to make something universally legible over 25 countries, PEGI uses a simpler set of seven content descriptors. ![]() ![]() ![]() Die Dating-Website ist die erste Glaubens brasilianische frauen mentalität Mentalität ermutigt selbstbewusste und hoffnungsvolle Umgebung für online Daten die ernsthaft zu entscheiden geradeaus.
